The VW Golf GTD was first introduced in the 82 model year, and was built from 03/82 to 12/83.  It was marketed as a special VW sales campaign in Europe (campaign S 725)

It came with a CY code (solid lifter turbo diesel) engine with 51KW (70bhp) output, coupled to a 5 speed FF code transaxle.

It shared heavy duty dampeners with the Golf GTI, along with interior and exterior trim.  GTI-style badges front and rear, as well as a black VW emblem in the grille helped set it apart from other Golfs.

The Golf GTD continued as a special trim level on the A2 platform with build dates from 08/83 to through the 88 model year.  It came with a JR code Turbo Diesel with 51KW (70hp) output, and was available with a variety of 5 speed gearboxes.  During this period a Jetta GTD was also offered in some countries.

In 1989 the GTD came with either the MF code or JR code engines.  At the same time, the Golf GL was available with an optional intercooled version of this engine, code RA which produced. 59KW output (80hp.)

From 1990 to 1992, the GTD came with either the JR/MF engine or the optional intercooled 1.6 TDs (codes RA and SB)

The intercooled 1.6TD engines featured a watercooled Garrett or KKK turbocharger and a small air-air intercooler mounted over the transaxle.  Air was then ducted from the front of the car over the intercooler.  In addition, modifications were made to the Bosch VE injection pump to increase fuel delivery to the cylinders.  Different injector nozzles were also specified for this engine.

Below is a diagram of the intercooler setup from the VW parts fiche (engine codes RA, SB in A2 chassis)
